Spirals of the self: Barry Hannah's autobiographical method

  • Original language description

This article explores the career of Barry Hannah and attempts to show how Hannah was influenced by modernist Henry Miller, both in terms of style and subject matter. Like Miller’s Tropic of Cancer (1934) some of Hannah’s work does not neatly fit into the genre of fiction or memoir. Miller’s autobiographical maneuvers can help us understand Hannah’s ambitions as a writer at many junctures.
