A brief history of documenta’s concern with the concept of world art
Original language description
For nearly 70 years, the documenta as a large exhibition in five-year intervals has been able to claim, with great success, to determine what the hegemonic Western art world defined as contemporary art. With documenta 1997, and especially five years later in 2002, the exhibition broadened its view to include global and postcolonial art productions and discourses. This article aims to present a brief history of documenta starting from the ruins left by the second world war. The central focus will be on the stages during which documenta expanded its view of the art of the world outside the North and West over almost 70 years. It becomes apparent that the choice and analyses of postcolonial thematic fields which were initiated in advance via theoretical discourses and discussion platforms, did not always result in a convincing aesthetic statement in the following exhibitions in Kassel. By 2022 at the latest, with documenta fifteen, the previous exhibition format was dissolved by a multi-headed group of curators and a collaborative principle of showing artistic and cultural statements from the global South was enforced with the delegation of curatorial settings to collectives.
