The paper presents the results of a partial research in the area of enterprise competitiveness and performance which was carried out within the project SGS-2013-040 Development paradigm in the 21st century and its influence on economic entities behavior.Selected key approaches to competitive ability and performance of an enterprise have been analyzed. Similarly the relations between competitive ability, performance, success and effectiveness of an enterprise have also been analyzed and presented in mutual relations. The paper identifies key aspects and criteria which can quantify the level of long-term sustainable competitiveness of business operations in conditions of small open economy - the Czech Republic. Efficient economy with information has been chosen as a dominant factor. The research outputs present possible ways which can achieve, help to improve or sustain competitive ability and performance of business entities and thereby also region, state - economy as a whole.
