THE THREATS TO CROSS-BORDER COOPERATION IN 2017 FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF CONSUMER SURPLUS AND PRODUCER SURPLUS

  • Original language description

Examples of countries that after the fall of the Iron Curtain seized the opportunity of cross-border cooperation in the field of international trade in the maximum extent are the Czech Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany. The unprecedented growth of mutual trade is based on one of the basic principles of economics built on the recognition that international trade realised on the principle of absolute and comparative advantages increases the economic prosperity of national economies because the gains of the winners exceed the losses of the losers. The condition for the application of the above-mentioned principle is the existence of a common market on which obstacles to the free movement of goods, services, people and capital are removed. The refugee crisis in Europe, Brexit and the growth of protectionism in the USA have raised issues connected with the threats that may damage significantly the mutual cross-border cooperation. When analyzing the pros and cons of international cooperation economists often use two tools: the consumer surplus and producer surplus. This paper is an assessment of how the above-mentioned threats, which renew barriers to international trade, can affect the growth or decline in consumer surplus and producer surplus.
