The contribution presents results of the research focused on the current and forthcoming adaptation of small and medium-sized enterprises in the service sector on technological, economic, social and environmental Industry and Society 4.0 conditions. The main goals of the presented research phase were identification, analysis and evaluation of present state of this sector and its motivation and preparedness to the transition to new conditions with specific focus on companies in the South-West region of the Czech Republic. Methods of qualitative research as desk research, explanatory and interpretation methods, questionnaire survey and statistical evaluation of data and information collected in the questionnaire survey were used to achieve the main goal of the research project´s introductory phase formulated in the following hypothesis: “Small and medium-sized enterprises in knowledge intensive sectors using in their business processes new knowledge, personal and organizational management achieve higher level of preparedness for implementation of methods and tools of Industry 4.0 and Society 4.0”. The results of the research document strong current and future need and usefulness of strengthening knowledge and innovation potential of the concerned companies including development of new competencies of their employees. Acquired information proved the necessity of access to sufficient internal and external financial resources and strong interest in cooperation with academic sector in development of methods and tools supporting relevant companies in their adaptation to new conditions. The economic and social impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 further reinforced and accelerated the necessity of fast, effective, and efficient adaptation of small and medium-sized enterprises to the Society 4.0 technological, economic, and environmental conditions predetermining their sustainable operation. The results and outcomes of this phase of research created base for continued research in 2020/21 focused on development of methodology of small and medium sized knowledge intensive services adaptation.
