Stereological tools for quantitative microscopy of the aortic wall with focus on the abdominal aortic aneurysm
Original language description
In both normal and pathological histology of aorta, quantitative problems arise often as extensions of qualitative description and classification (e.g. classification of atherosclerosis, assessment of vulnerability of atherosclerotic lesions, leukocyte infiltration of tissue samples etc.). In this chapter we review and illustrate stereological methods currently available for quantification of histopathological changes in aortic abdominal aneurysms and for assessment of vulnerability of atherosclerotic lesions. Quantitative analysis requires unbiased sampling of tissue blocks. We demonstrate stereological quantification of vascular smooth muscle phenotype, leukocyte infiltration of aortic wall and mural thrombi, vascularisazion of the aneurysm and elastinolysis of the tunica media. Description of morphological properties of tissue specimen using continuous variables and systematic unbiased sampling permits us to apply standard statistical procedures and tests to morphometric data.
