Failure prediction of unidirectional carbon composite under biaxial loading
Original language description
Currently, the failure of composite material is predictable only in basic load cases. In many of states of stress, failure of unidirectional composites cannot be predicted with existing failure criteria. Experimental and numerical simulation of the composite under biaxial loading was undertaken in this work. Specimens consist of high-strength carbon fibres and epoxy resin. Specimens were exposed to the combination of tension in the fibre direction and localised compression in transverse direction. Numerical models were created in the finite element system MSC.Marc using eight-node brick elements. Transversely isotropic material properties were considered. A recently proposed nonlinear function with constant asymptote was used for dependence of shear modulus on shear strain. Predictive capabilities of the maximum stress, Hashin and LaRC04 criteria were evaluated by means of the comparison of experimental results and the numerical simulation.
