Analytical solution for transient response of an infinite viscoelastic strip

  • Original language description

This paper lies within the framework of elasto-dynamics, in particular, the problem of transient waves propagated in an infinite viscoelastic strip with free-free boundaries is treated. Using the exact theory of two-dimensional continuum, the transient response of the strip subjected to a specific type of transverse pressure load is investigated. The system of equations of motion represented by two integro-differential equations is solved by means of the Laplace and Fourier transforms and the exact formulae for basic mechanical quantities are derived in the Laplace domain. The numerical inverse Laplace transform based on the FFT and Wynn’s epsilon accelerator is then used to obtain the results in time domain. Using the spatio-temporal distribution of the total velocity, the wave phenomena in the strip are analysed and discussed. Finally, the analytical results represented by the time histories of velocity components at specific points of the strip are then compared with those resulted from numerical simulations performed in the finite element code MSC.Marc/Mentat. The accuracy and the efficiency of both approaches are discussed based on this comparison.
