Exploration of Component Diagrams with Multifocal Highlighting
Original language description
Getting insight into a software system is getting harder with its growing complexity. In this paper we propose techniques to improve this process through exploration of reverse engineered component diagram of the system. We are using two interconnected diagrams - a primary diagram with the overview layout to reflect user's mental model of the system and a secondary diagram showing a filtered out subset of the model for which a separate layout calculation can be trigger. Further we present a multi-target hotspot to visually emphasize neighbors of one or several selected components without introducing temporal or spatial separation. Examples from a prototype tool are used to illustrate the concepts.
