Nonlinear Vibration of Nuclear Fuel Rods

  • Original language description

The paper deals with nonlinear vibration of nuclear fuel rods in hexagonal-type fuel assemblies. The fuel rod is considered as a system consisting of two impact-interacting beam-type subsystems. Outer subsystem is a fuel rod cladding in the form of a long and thin zirconium tube supported at several levels by prestressed spacer grid cells. Inside the cladding, a fuel pellets stack is situated that is axially prestressed by fixation spring. Between both subsystems, there is a little clearance. During a vibration caused by pressure pulsations of coolant, impact vibration occurs between both subsystems. The impacts are described by the model including possible stick, slip and separation phases. At the levels of spacer grids, bending vibration causes fretting wear of cladding. The aim of this paper is to perform numerical simulations to estimate fretting wear dependence on a phase of operational cycle. A specific phase in operational cycle is characterised by several parameters, such as clearance between both subsystems, prestress of spacer grid cells and a force of fixation spring.
