Airway dimension and orthodontic treatment of distoocclusion
Original language description
Aim: The presented study evaluates the ways in which an extraction or non-extraction orthodontic treatment of distoocclusion in growing patients may affect selected skeletal and dental parameters and anteroposterior dimension of airways in the area of oropharynx as represented in the cephalogram, and to determine whether the potential changes may be significant for a patient. Material and method: The retrospective study was carried out using cephalograms of growing patients. The subjects were divided into three groups according to the type of treatment (extraction, molar distalization, control group). 72 cephalograms were evaluated at times T1 and T2. Dental, skeletal and upper airways changes were assessed. The recorded changes were statistically processed. Results: There were found no statistically significant changes in the upper airways parameters evaluated. Statistically significant differences (p<0.05) between the groups were found in the following parameters: SNA, Pog to vertical, +1/BISP, -1/ML, U molar to vertical. Conclusion: The treatment of distoocclusion with distalization of upper molars or with extractions influences dental relationships in particular. No treatment used to correct distoocclusion examined in our study contributed to the change of anteroposterior dimensions of the upper airways (Ortodoncie 2019, 28, No. 1, p. 33-43).
