Casting stress detection by X-rays
Original language description
Thermal stresses are induced by temperature differences between the individual parts of cooled castings. In addition to the thermal stresses, transformation stresses are set up in the casting due to the increase in volume that takes place as austenite transforms to other structures. At low temperatures, the stress due to contraction and phase transformation adds to the nominal load of the cast component which may cause its fracture far before the load has reached the yield point. At elevated temperatures, the elastic component of the strain diminishes while the plastic strain increasesoup to a critical range of temperatures (typically, 620 - 650°C for steel and 400 - 620°C for grey cast iron) when the plastic strain prevails. Mostly, it is believed that at this stage the stresses are completely relieved. But our x-ray measurements carried out by a special technique which is to be discussed in detail in our contribution show that it is not true.
