VIRTHUMAN is a numerical model of a human body developed for applications in traffic safety. It is formed of multi-body structure representing basic skeleton and deformable segments representing soft tissues. In this work we developed and validated a newneck model in VIRTHUMAN. It is formed of rigid bodies interconnected via kinematic joints. Proper setting of the material characteristics is done upon available experimental data including 15g frontal and 7g lateral sled tests with volunteers. Ranges ofmotion of individual cervical joints are applied to prevent excessive deformations in higher energy level impacts. Biofidelity of the developed neck model is tested on the Vezin sled test. In this test a seated human body is exposed to accelerations corresponding to frontal crash at 30 km/h. Results are in a good agreement with experimental data obtained for post-mortem human surrogates. Application of the model for virtual prototyping concerning the whiplash injury is outlined.
