Original language description
The paper describes volunteerism as a specific form of behaviour related to a wide spectrum of various activities in which people devote their time and endeavour in order to be useful for other people. It describes the psychological and sociological discourses of volunteering and its role in non-profit sector into account. It emphasizes some determinants of this form of prosocial behaviour, whose mutual action leads to helping. They are social and personal standard, prosocial personality traits, i.e. empathy, altruism, moral reasoning, internalized values. It mentions three demographic variables of volunteers that are often examined: education, income, sex and presents significant models attempted to identify factors supporting voluntary work. The paper describes the tradition of modern volunteerism in Czech Republic, the types of volunteerism and volunteer activity and its present status in the Czech Republic.
