Change of regimen in cardiological prevention from the patient´s perspective
Original language description
OBJECTIVE: Medical statistics show that cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) constitute the most frequent cause of mortality both in our country and in the world. We classify those diseases as lifestyle diseases. The therapy of cardiovascular diseases requires active cooperation of the patient. The level of the patient's cooperation with the healthcare staff is called compliance. The concept of compliance is being replaced by the term adherence. Adherence is defined as a behaviour in which the patients implement suggested changes in their life. GOAL: One of the goals of our study consisted in assessing the patients' opinions on the implementation of the educational process in non-pharmacological intervention in the therapy of CVDs. METHODS: The inquiry was carried out by the technique of structured interviewer-respondent interview (face-to-face). To meet the goals, a non-standardized questionnaire for the patients was developed. The questions evaluated the patients' opinions on the implementation of multimodal interventions (stopping smoking, modification of alimentation, stress, modification of exercise) in practice. Likert scale was used to rate the opinions. The selection set included 1992 patients; the set was representative with respect to age and gender. The results were statistically evaluated. RESULTS: The patients' opinions show that in the consulting room, the physician implements health education in the area of regimen more frequently than the nurse. Further results show that more than 50 % patients reported that the healthcare workers speak of change of regimen only rarely or never. But the question about which effect the healthcare workers' actions have upon the change of the patient's lifestyle brings an interesting comparison of the reality. The most citizens consider the healthcare workers' actions in the regimen education rather average in all educational topics of the therapy of CVDs (stopping smoking, modification of alimentation, stress, modification of exercise, observance of pharmacotherapy). CONCLUSIONS: The results of our study show the patients' opinion on the implementation of the education in the area of regimen within the therapy of CVDs. Interesting is the finding that the patients perceive the implementation of the education as little efficient, which corresponds with the fact that, according to the patients, health education takes place only rarely or never. The results suggest insufficiently implemented education as seen by the actual patients. The long lasting situation of inefficiently implemented education in cardiological prevention may have negative economic impacts.
