Problematic situation in care for seniors with dementia syndrome in nursing homes with special regime
Original language description
Background: Nursing homes with special regime provide long-stay services to persons with reduced sufficiency due to chronic mental disease or addiction to habit-forming substances, as well as to persons with senile, Alzheimer’s dementia and other types of dementia who have reduced self-sufficiency due to the above stated diseases and whose situation requires regular help of another natural person. The regime in those facilities providing social services is adapted to specific needs of such persons. When caring for seniors with dementia syndrome in the nursing home with special regime, the workers in helping professions face problematic situations and inappropriate behaviour of dementia patients (verbally non-aggressive behaviour, verbally aggressive behaviour, physically non-aggressive behaviour, physically aggressive behaviour. Aim: The aim of the quantitative research consisted in finding out which problems do the workers (nurse in charge, ward sister, nurses, physiotherapist, ergotherapist, social service worker and social worker) face in the area of care for seniors with dementia syndrome in nursing homes with special regime. Methods: Quantitative research strategy was chosen; the interviewing method and the technique of a self-designed questionnaire consisting of 21 questions was chosen. The research set consisted of 82 workers of helping professions who were employed in 5 nursing homes with special regime in the district of České Budějovice. Intentional (purposeful) selection through institutions was chosen as the method for respondent selection. The data were entered into and processed in SPSS 16.0 Program. Results: The results showed that the respondents faced most frequently physically non-aggressive behaviour, followed by verbally non-aggressive behaviour. Verbally aggressive and physically aggressive behaviours ranked last, at the same place. When ascertaining the level of strain caused by inappropriate behaviour of the seniors with dementia, it was found out that the workers perceive verbally non-aggressive and physically non-aggressive behaviour as the least straining. Physically aggressive behaviour and verbally aggressive behaviour is the most straining for the workers. Conclusion: The care for seniors with dementia syndrome is both physically and mentally challenging. The carers often face problematic situations and inappropriate behaviour of the people with dementia and they have to cope with it during professional care. The carers should understand the displays of the dementia syndrome and the reasons of inappropriate behaviour of seniors with dementia. It is very important to search potential solution of problematic situations, to work in team and to make use of regular supervision.
