Positive and negative aspects of social work with patients after brain damage from the perspective of social worker

  • Original language description

The article is focused on social work with persons after brain damage. A brain damage caused both by a disease or by an injury constitutes a problem in the whole society. The coverage of follow-up care for persons after brain damage and for their families, provided by social service organizations, is often difficult particularly from the perspective of availability, quality of financial demandingness of such services. The motive to research this issue consisted in the assumption that people after acquired brain damage and their families face a number of difficulties also with respect to continuity of the services or to involvement and cooperation of a multidisciplinary team. Not only the families face many obstacles in the follow-up organizations. The social workers - as helping professions - may perceive negative aspects of their work and pressure both from the state (legislation, administrative burden, financial remuneration), and from the organization where they work, from the patient and from the patient’s family. All that may have negative impact on their work. The study also tries to map the positive aspects of the work of social workers. The study uses subjective statements of social workers working in follow-up organizations for brain damage patients in České Budějovice to find out which positive and negative aspects of social work with the above stated patients they perceive, in order to make a comprehensive picture of the work of a social worker with brain damage patients. The study should result in a proposal for overcoming the negative aspects and in mapping the positive aspects perceived by the social workers when working with clients after brain damage. The results of the work will also contribute to compile comprehensive results of coordinated rehabilitation of brain damage patients within the GAJU project called "Coordinated rehabilitation of brain damage patients (reg. No. GAJU 138/2016/S)". The work can also contribute to improve the level of information of the families of people after brain damage with respect to the options, continuity and availability of social care services.
