Relation of the financial amount spent by Czech citizens to BMI index in context of prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases

  • Original language description

The BMI index has a comprehensive effect on the individual's life and, in relation to prevention and therapy of cardiovascular diseases, it affects also economic aspects like the finances spent by the individual in this connection. This article, based on the implemented project supported from the program project of the Czech Ministry of Health with reg. No.15-31000A, called "Intervention procedures in preventive cardiology", was aimed at ascertaining, describing and evaluating the relations of the financial amount spent by the citizens of the Czech Republic on the therapy of heart and vessel diseases in selected context (financial amount spent on sports activities, BMI index, financial amount spent on therapy of cardiovascular diseases) and the impact of the individual's financial contribution from the perspective of the individual's income. The structure of the selection set of citizens corresponds to the structure of all Czech citizens from the perspective of regions, genders and ages. The total selection set consists of 1992 citizens (937 males and 1055 females). The study was implemented under use of the quantitative research strategy in 2016. Non-standardized questionnaires and the standardized SF-36 questionnaire were used for the data collection. The statistical data processing was performed by the SASD program, version 1.4.12. The study was aimed at ascertaining the amount of the finances spent by the respondents in a month in connection with sports activities and with therapy of heart and vessel diseases in relation to their BMI indexes. 78.3% respondents stated that their monthly expenses spent in connection with sports activities 500 CZK; 14.5 % respondents report a range of 501 CZK to 1000 CZK; only 7.2 % respondents report to spent more than 1000 CZK. The study results proved a statistically significant relation between the BMI index and the financial amount invested in sports activities. The results show that citizens with ideal weight invest in sports activities more than citizens with obesity. As for the monthly financial amount invested by the respondents in therapy of cardiovascular diseases, 82.1 % of them reported an amount under 500 CZK per month, 13.2 % respondents report a range of 501 CZK to 1000 CZK, and 4.7 % respondents report an amount above 1000 CZK. A statistically significant relation between the BMI index and the financial amount invested in therapy of heart and vessel diseases was proved here too. Higher expenses for the therapy are spent by persons with BMI in the obesity zone, while lower expenses are spent by persons showing ideal BMI values. When comparing the results acquired from the respondents, a statistically significant relation of the BMI index with the financial amount spent on sports activities and with the financial amount spent on the therapy of heart vessel diseases was proved.
