Social Support for Seniors Living in the Home Environment

  • Original language description

Social support that affects a person's health and mental well-being is very important for a happy life in old age. A stable network of friendly relations is perceived as a protective factor of social exclusion in old age. Aim: Present partial quantitative findings concerning the possibilities of social support as a tool for the prevention of social exclusion of seniors in the context of the project "Social exclusion of seniors 65+ living in the home environment in the Czech Republic". The main objective of the whole project in which these partial results were obtained was to identify the forms, causes and consequences of social exclusion of seniors aged 65 and older living in their own homes. A quantitative research strategy was used for the research and the PAPI data collection methodology was applied in the field survey. The research sample consisted of seniors aged 65 and older who live in their own homes. Outcomes: The research outcomes do not indicate that seniors would be a socially excluded group. Most of the seniors living in their own homes claim to get enough or rather enough of social interactions and do not feel lonely. The family, friends, neighbours, the community and interactions with them constitute an important social support which, however, is affected by the age and health factors. Volunteering also seems to be a natural form of interactions that certainly deserves the necessary interest and support.
