Telenursing during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Czech Republic - representative sociological survey

  • Original language description

Objective: Telenursing appeared to be a new opportunity in the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing education and self-care, overcoming issues such as restrictions on hospital beds and nursing staff, and reducing the cost of treatment and disease transition. Methods: The representative sociological study used a non-standardized questionnaire. The sample of nurses was constructed using quota selection, and its structure corresponded to the composition of the population in terms of age, gender, and region (region). The sample consisted of 1197 nurses. Results: Currently, only 4.9% of nurses in the Czech Republic use the on-line system (via the Internet) to communicate with patients. The remaining 95.1% of nurses said they do not currently use any system. Our research identified a statistically significant relationship between the use of the on-line patient communication system and nurse age (p < 0.05), the type of healthcare facility in which the nurse works (p < 0.001), and the workplace during the COVID-19 pandemic (0.01). Interest in the on-line patient communication system was statistically related to the education of nurses who do not yet use the system (< 0.01), the number of years working in the health sector (< 0.001), the type of healthcare facility (< 0.01), and their workplace of during the COVID-19 pandemic (< 0.05). During the pandemic, nurses working in primary care had a greater interest in introducing an on-line patient communication system. Most nurses expressed interest in an on-line system that primarily serves to contact patients regarding regular preventive examinations (65.6%); fewer expressed interest in an on-line system for patient education by the nurse (35.3%).Conclusion: Supporting nurses in the Czech Republic is critical in challenging situations such as the Covid-19 pandemic. Telenursing and other creative methods of providing remote nursing care represent an important solution.
