Original language description
The article surveys the university reforms in the Habsburg Monarchy during the Age of Enlightenment. It explains how the governmental regulations opened the way to modern philosophy by the reforms of the 1750s. The reforms of theological studies initiated by abbot Franz Stephan Rautenstrauch in the 1770s helped change the role of priests and of the religious education. They determined also the intellectual content of the Josephist church reform. However, the successive reforms aimed at controlling scientific work at the universities and degrading the universities to training centres for state officials and useful citizens. The last reforms undertaken in during the French Revolution had a repressive character.
