    Who was Jordanes?

  • Original language description

Although early Byzantine historian Jordanes undeniably belonged to the environment of Constantinople, his personal background seems to be more complex. Both his family and his personal connections point to Gothic settlements in northern Balkans, possiblyto the community of Gothi minores. Jordanes may have been thoroughly Romanized, hailing from Moesia secunda, capable of speaking both Latin and Greek, considering himself a Roman, and yet at the same time speaking at least some Gothic and upholding a connection with a community of Balkan Goths.
