Like a great Ring of pure and endless light: on mysticism in Henry Vaughan's Silex Scintillans
Original language description
The following paper deals with mystical imagination in Henry Vaughan's major collection Silex Scintillans (1650, 1655). The first part deals with the definition and basic forms of mysticism in Vaughan's work (esp. the unified vision of his world and the dialogical nature of the poetic self), the second part traces the sources of his mystical vision to his association with Hermetic philosophy and discusses the imagery connected with it (i.e. the doctrine of the sentient nature of all reality, the problem of the quintessence and the images taken from the alchemical tradition) and the last, third section links Vaughan's mystical vision of the world with some of the principles of modern ecological thought. The article wants to present a reassessment of Vaughan's mystical poetry as a source of inspiration for understanding the vital relation between the intuitive and rational understanding of human existence and its relation to other forms of life.
