Orphaned children in Bohemian rural society in the first half of the nineteenth century: care, co-residence and inheritance practices
Original language description
The law protection of orphans has had a long tradition in the Czech lands but effective institutional care lacked in rural space even in the 19th century. The orphaned children depended on their widowed parents or other relatives. Their position rested with the family estate and their expectation to inherit it. The present study focuses on the situation and living condition of orphans in the estate of Nový Rychnov in the South Bohemia in 1785–1855. Here analyzed database of 1199 orphans is based on parish registers, land registers, marriage contracts, wills and listings of confession.
