Habsburg Empire and French Kingdom in their Struggle for the Polish Crown
Original language description
The study focuses on an analysis of the tactics used by the Habsburg and French diplomats before the election of the king of Poland in 1573. Both countries sent their best diplomats. French ambassadors sought to gain the Polish throne for the brother of the French King Henry of Valois, the Emperor Maximilian II. Habsburg pushed one of his sons. While Habsburg diplomats concentrated on dealing with the most powerful magnates and tried not to make too much promises, the French ambassador bishop Jean de Montluc tried to impress even less affluent nobles. At the same time, he made great promises. His tactics helped his candidate to be elected, but subsequently it significantly complicated the position of the new king.
