The origins of the aesthetic appreciation and artistic depiction of the industrial landscape
Original language description
The article presents a historical overview of aesthetic attitudes towards the industrial landscape and industrial areas, such as factories, mines or smelters, especially in the nineteenth century. It argues for a more diversified approach to the period, which in the context of classicism, romanticism or various aesthetic theories, such as picturesqueness, brought a whole range of attitudes to the industrial landscape - from displeasure and disgust to positive aesthetic appreciation and indifference. The starting material is travelogues, poetry and prose fiction and works of fine art, especially works created in Britain and Central Europe in the period are compared.
