Elephants in the Political Propaganda of Maximilian II
Original language description
In the allegorical programmes of the tournaments and entries the elephants represented, according to classical and Christian traditions, the martial prowess of famous military leaders, their audacity and political power. Maximilian´s political propaganda built on this legacy, in particular at the end of the 1560s, when the purpose of imperial propaganda was to halt the declining military reputation of the emperor in Central Europe after the Siege of Szigetvár. The elephant theme was used in the decoration of residences of noblemen in the Kingdom of Bohemia.
