Joseph von Sonnenfels and the Political Codex (1763–1817)

Original language description

Apart from the civil law and penal law, the Habsburg monarchy planned to provide a systematic codification of ‘political laws’. Even though the project was accomplished, the political codex did not enter in force. Its manuscript version was destroyed in the fire of the Justizpalast in Vienna in 1927. The present study is based on the manuscript version discovered in Prague, in the Chotek family archives. The archives in Prague preserve the all the documents relating to the project from 1778 to Sonnenfels’s death in 1817. The study reconstructs all the stages of the preparations of the codex and shows how it changed after Sonnenfels joined the team. The manuscript of the codex is a part of Sonnenfels’ s oeuvre which had been unknown until recently.
