  • Original language description

The following article discusses the concept of economy of nature in the writings of Gilbert White (1720-1793) and Carl Linneaus (1707-1778) and the impact their work had on the rise of the Romantic ecological sensitivity and the beginnings of ecology. It themetises the oscillation of the proto-ecological thought between the concepts of usefulness and enchantment: nature is thought to have a specific form of pro-existence: it provides sustenance, but it also represents the most fundamental source of beauty humanity possesses. The discussion of the work of Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862) offers an insight into one of the key Romantic attempts to integrate usefulness and enchantment into a concept of a synthetic co-existence. The late 19th century split between the Geisteswissenschaften and Naturwissenschaften shows how this Romantic vision deteriorates into a sense of detached objectivity. The rise of the modern eco-consciousness (and eco-criticism) in the 20th century proves the vitality of the duality between emotional identification (enchantment) and rational analysis (usefulness): i.e., preserving the awareness that we depend on the planet and the incredible potential we have to articulate the voice of the voiceless in science and in poetry.
