In the second half of the seventeenth century, the Spanish court was one of the most significant centers of political power in Europe. Alongside cities such as Vienna, London, and Paris, Madrid served as a key stage for international diplomacy, where decisions were made that could influence affairs across Europe and beyond. As a result, the court of the Spanish monarchy hosted numerous foreign nobles and diplomats who represented the interests of their respective rulers. Given the diverse origins of these representatives and the varying relationships—both cooperative and adversarial—between their states and the Spanish crown, a strict diplomatic hierarchy developed within the court. This hierarchy was particularly evident in ceremonial practices, such as the formal entrances of ambassadors, which symbolically reflected the status of political relationships between Spain and other states. This paper examines these ceremonial and hierarchical distinctions through the cases of two Central European diplomats: Melchior von Ruck, representing the Elector of Brandenburg, and Paul Sixt II, ambassador of Emperor Leopold I.
