Behavioural genetics is an important area of research, because the behavioural repertoire of domestic animals is so rich and complex, with striking similarities and differences between species and all of its affect on animal welfare and productivity. This review is directed on the genetics of behaviour, we explain how behavioral genetics can be used in breeding programmes and to learn more about the genetic variation in these traits. It includes examples from dairy cattle as well as beef cattle and illustrates the need for comparative studies. We provide an overview of studies on cattle that emphasises an inter-individual variability and a relative intra-individual consistency in fear responsiveness and discuss problems that may hinder the genetic evaluation and the application of temperament traits for genetic selection.

Czech description

Genetika chování je důležitý obor výzkumu, protože repertoár chování domácích zvířat je velmi bohatý a spletitý s výraznými mezidruhovými podobmostmi a rozdíly a se všemi jeho vlivy na pohodu a produktivitu zvířat. Tato práce je zaměřena na genetiku chování, vysvětlujeme, jak může být genetika chování využita ve šlechtitelských programech a zjišťuje více o genetických variacích těchto rysů. Zahrnuje příklady mléčného skotu a hovězího skotu a objasňuje potřebu porovnávacích studií. Podáváme přehled studií dobytka, který zdůrazňuje rozdílnost mezi jedinci a relativní odolnost jedinců vůči stresu z neznámého. Zabýváme se problémy, které mohou ztěžovat genetické hodnocení a využití povahových rysů pro genetický výběr.
