Active food parasitism in the Grey Heron
Original language description
New types of food acquirement by Grey heron (Ardea cinerea) are described and documented. Nesting population of White-tailed eagle (Haliaetus albicilla) has been repatriated in Třeboň Basin Biosphere Reserve (Ramsar locality) in the Czech Republic. During winter eagles are fed on dead fish and poultry cadavers. Since Grey herons are not able to swallow a whole big fish an interesting food parasitism was arised. Herons attact raptors (especially Buzzards ? Buteo buteo, but also Goshawks ? Accipiter gentilis and Eagles) and eat small pieces of fish tissue directly from the bill of these birds
