The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of seasonal pasture on mountain farms on somatic cell counts in milk as an indicator of the udder health of cows. The somatic cell count (SCC) in individual cow milk samples was analysed in fifteen herds in the Czech Republic in the period 2000-2008. The herds consisted of Holstein and Czech Fleckvieh cows, which were grazed seasonally from May to October. In the rest of a year there were offered a grass or maize silage in the stalls. The General Linear Models analysis was conducted in order to evaluate the effect of four seasonal periods (May - July, August - October, November - January, February - April) on SCC in milk. The effect of breed, parity, year and days in milk (covariate) were also included in the analysis. The effect of the season was highly significant (P < 0.001). Lower SCC were found in the two pastures periods (geometric mean SCC 1 09 thousands and 11 3 thousands ml-1, in May - July and in August - October period)
