Bridging global and microregional scales: ploidy distribution in Pilosella echioides (Asteraceae) in central Europe
Result description
Five ploidy levels were found (2x, 3x, 4x, 5x and 6x) at dominantly ploidy-uniform populations. Even though, almost one quarter of populations harboured 2-5 cytotypes. Quite surprisingly, 3x cytotype prevailed in some mixed-ploidy populations, which wasthe first evidence of such phenomenon in plant system with exclusively sexual reproduction. The theory of maintenance of cytotype co-existence based not only on establishment of pre- and post- zygotic barriers, but even on free mating inetractions was suggested.
