Analysis of Noise in Different Types of Milking Equipment

  • Original language description

In its first part, the presented publication synthetizes the generally accepted knowledge of acoustics. The explanation of the basic concepts of sound is followed by the description of the principles of sound propagation, its measurement in the environment, human perception, and, consequently, several cases of negative effects of excessive noise on health. A separate part is devoted to the general characteristics of noise sources in production, which are followed by possible measures to minimize their negative effects. The sources of noise in livestock farming and the possibilities of defining their effects are further described. In particular, these literary sources served the authors of this publication in comparing the noise values obtained in their experiments and thus in estimating the degree of harmfulness of the evaluated devices. The characteristics of the milking devices and their loudest parts, the vacuum pumps, are the contents of the final part of the literature review. The results of original experiments, which follow the literature review, provide an evaluation of noise production by various types of milking equipment. The measurements were carried out on 20 farms in Slovakia, Finland and Czech Republic, where three herringbone parlours, three tandem parlours, three side-by- side parlours, three rotary parlours, six automatic milking systems, and two pipeline milking systems were evaluated. Primarily, the exposure of dairy cows and operators has been analysed and expressed by means of noise maps. The data were collected throughout the milking facilities and, in cases where the milking device was part of the housing area, measurements were carried in the relevant parts of the structures. Particularly, data were collected in the areas where the operators worked and were also measured by a personal dosimeter. A complex picture of the noise production by each milking device was obtained, which could then be compared with others and also evaluated within the groups of devices of the same type. The exposure of dairy cows to different types of milking equipment has also been analysed at different frequencies. Finally, the noise levels of different vacuum sources of milking devices have been compared. In the final part of the publication, the results are discussed and compared with the existing sources and hypotheses established before the experiments are confirmed or refuted.
