    Pressure shockwaves in environmental engineering

  • Original language description

Pressure shockwave generators for use in environmental technologies have decades of development behind them. This chapter provides a brief overview of their technological development as well as their expanding range of environmental applications. The first pressure wave generators used explosives and were used, for example, for landscaping. Modern pressure wave generators use complex electronics and generate pressure waves in rapid succession by expanding plasma. These pressure shockwaves allow for the deep disintegration of organic matter, which can be used in biorefineries where a range of high value-added reactants are produced, from pharmaceuticals, food, paints, solvents and even to biofuel production. Promising directions for further development and economically promising applications are identified.
