The Field of Apologetics Today: Responding to the Calls of Scripture and the Second Vatican Council
Original language description
The article considers the identity and form of apologetics today, taking this from various quotes from Scripture and the Second Vatican Council. It also tracks the development of the field from the earliest Christian times, noting how apologetics became increasingly distant from its original purpose, which led to a somewhat widespread rejection of the field after the council. By separating apologetics from post-conciliar fundamental theology and using the quotes, which focus on accurate communication that is effective for the recipient, the New Apologetics is described. This includes a clear focus on practical and pastoral approaches, particularly with reference to Avery Dulles’s works, and suggestions on how academia can support practical apologetics.
