What to Hope for Human Dignity? Crisis and Restoration of Man in Francisco de Vitoria

  • Original language description

The philosophical and theological renovation carried out by the intellectuals of Salamanca in the 16th century represents one of the most important cultural events in the History of Modern Philosophy. According to the words of Juan Belda Plans, the renovation achieved by the School of Salamanca is intimately connected with the changing concept of “man”, which occurred at the end of XVth and the beginning of XVIth centuries in the Mediterranean area. The progressive abandonment of the medieval concepts of man for the new ideas dealing with the concepts of the Italian Renaissance forced the philosophers of Salamanca to ask themselves what was the proper role for human beings in the world. Among these scholars emerged the Dominican Francisco de Vitoria (1483-1546), who in his Relectio De Potestate Civili shed light on the concept of man, discussing the crisis of human beings and proposing new interpretations based on the restoration of their dignity. This lead to a new concept of hope, declined in a threefold path: rationality, action, and salvation. This paper aims to show the thought of Vitoria on the concept of human dignity, analysing it through his words, underlining the methods and the results he acquired by his research, and suggesting his possible application to contemporary theories on man and human dignity.
