Virtual reality as a tool for keeping the elderly active: selected issues
Original language description
Rapid development in the field of assistive technologies combined with increasing digital literacy of seniors create a favorable environment for the use of virtual reality (VR) with elderly users, even those in the so-called fourth age. The use of virtual reality opens new possibilities for improving their quality of life, which is often affected by physical, mental and social deficits and a substantial reduction in autonomy. The key features of this VR technology are immersiveness and interactivity (a feature that allows the user and environment to interact). These functions play a key role in VR use to keep seniors active, for example, through memory training, sensory or sensorimotor stimulation, o reminiscence sessions. In this review, we present current findings relevant to the use of VR as a tool for keeping elderly users active. We characterize several aspects of the virtual experience representing reality and some principles for meaningful implementation of VR into the activity program of a senior or nursing home. The overview part is illustrated by partial findings of the VIREAS project. The first experiments showed that a feeling of safety and comfort, an attractive scenario, easy operation together with a suitable time of day for VR sessions play an important role in the acceptance of VR. VR, as one kind of activity in the senior or nursing home should always be a source of positive emotions. It should support memories and bring new stimuli that can be used in follow-up individual or group activities in the facility.
