“Let your speech be yea, yea: no, no.”On the Interpretation of Chapter Eight of Amoris Lætitia
Original language description
The aim of this paper is to analyse and evaluate some relevant passages of chapter 8 of exhortation Amoris Lætitia in the light of the relevant documents of the Catholic Church besides Amoris Lætitia. They are the passages aimed at answering the question: Is it allowed for Catholics who are divorced and remarried to receive Communion if they live more uxorio? The paper shows that the eighth chapter of Amoris Lætitia does not give a clear answer. For some, Amoris Lætitia has a binding force, for others it does not; moreover, interpretations concerning this issue vary. Therefore, attention is paid to the guidelines elaborated by bishops of Buenos Aires pastoral region. Pope Francis commented on these guidelines in personal correspondence, thus clarifying the problem of interpretation and pastoral application. However, this unorthodox interpretation and application is not compatible with orthodox practice and teaching. No general agreement on this issue currently exists among cardinals and bishops.
