Pain in Second Scholasticism: Cognitive or Affective State?

  • Original language description

In this paper, I present three theories of bodily pain as advocated by four Second Scholastics, namely Francisco Suárez (1548–1617), Raffaele Aversa (1589–1657), Bartolomeo Mastri (1602–1673), and Bonaventura Belluto (1600–1676). I raise two main questions. First, what is the nature of corporeal pain? Or, in other terms, to which power is the state of bodily pain to be attributed? Second, what are the adequate organic causes of pain? The paper will show how differently Second Scholastic authors answer these two questions.
