To Build Bridges and To Leaven the Dough: Caritas and diakonia in the Perspective of the Radically Secular Czech Experience

  • Original language description

This essay by Michal Opatrny and Karel Šimr deals with caritas and diaconia in the Czech Republic. It presents the history of the development of the two major Christian charities and their role in the Czech welfare system. The main features of the development of today’s organizations Caritas (Roman Catholic) and Diaconia (Protestant) are explained. This is contextualized in the Czech systém of welfare and social services as well as the churches’ other social and pastoral activities and their connection to Christian service to the poor and needy. Summarizing their own understanding of caritas and diaconia, the authors offer a theological hermeneutics for the social context of Czech Christians and churches.
