Although Stanier and colleagues proposed in 1978 that the nomenclature of the Cyanobacteria shall be governed by the provisions of the International Code of Nomenclature of Bacteria, they failed to properly cater for the needs of that Code. As a result anomenclatural system has emerged in which Cyanophyta/Cyanobacteria have been named both according to the provisions of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (ICBN) as well as the International Code of Nomenclature of Bacteria / the International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes (ICNB/ICNP), although their status under the latter Code is often uncertain. One of the critical issues is that valid publication of names under the ICNP includes a formal act of registration/indexing, centralizedin the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology (IJSEM), whereas few restrictions exist on the journal in which names may be validly published under the ICBN.
