A New Country Record of Langia zenzeroides zenzeroides Moore, 1872 (sphingidae: Smerinthinae) from Bhutan

  • Original language description

Earlier studies on the moths of Bhutan have not recorded the species. Dudgeon (1898) who conducted studies on the moths of Sikkim and Bhutan recorded the species from Kurseong, Sikkim at 1,524 m, but not from neighbouring Bhutan. Later in 1972, a team of entomologists from the Natural History Museum, Basel (Switzerland) undertook an expedition to study the moth fauna of Bhutan. They reported the presence of 10 species of Sphingidae, but not Langia zenzeroides (Dierl 1975). Recent studies by Irungbam and Kitching (2014) at Tsirang district in southern Bhutan reported the presence of 27 species of Sphingidae but they also did not record Langia zenzeroides from the southern part of Bhutan. Thus, the present sighting in Trashiyangtse district of Eastern Bhutan is significant. It is the first and confirmed record of the species from Bhutan.
