Original language description
The article is a response to the debate encouraged by our earlier article published in TREE, in which we point out that excess carbon determines allocation and plant-soil interactions. We agree with the fact that plant metabolic waste products released into the rhizosphere can still be traded - there may be some control over the timing of their release and some preference among recipients may exist. We assemble experimental data, confront them with definitions of 'trade', and argue that the existence of such a 'rhizosphere market' is not necessary to explain why plants generate excess carbon that is used by symbionts and soil organisms
