    Negative affect and motivational structure of alcohol drinking

    A motivational model of alcoholism posits that persons suffering from alcoholism turn to alcohol to obtain satisfactions that seem to them insufficiently available through the pursuit of other rewards (Cox & Klinger, 1988, 1990). Drinking motives can besubsumed into four categories resulting from two bipolar dimensions: the valence of expected affective change from drinking (enhancement of positive or reduction of negative affect) and direct vs. indirect impact (biochemical changes or mediation of other activities). The authors survey results of their previous studies on emotional/motivational aspects of drinking patterns. Altogether 287 inpatients diagnosed with alcoholism and 337 university students participated in 4 studies dealing with motivational structure related to drinking. As a central instrument, the Motivational Structure Questionnaire (MSQ) was used.
