Original language description
The article describes and explains both the differences and similarities in population and settlement development in Czech and Austrian parts of a cross-border region "Novohradské hory (Mountains) - Freiwald (Mountains)" in between 1930 (1934) and 2001.This prevalently hilly cross-border region occupies approx. 1525 sq. km. It spreads over the southern part of South Bohemia and the northern parts of Upper and Lower Austria. We gathered, organised and evaluated a great number of data about population development about all affected settlements (we defined 465 settlements in total) in 13 modern censuses. The most of our attention drew dramatic changes in population, as well as population structure, number of settlements and their percentage according topopulation-size types of settlements.
