Influence of Surface Modification to Abrasion Resistance of the Ropes
Original language description
The possibility of plasma coating for abrasion resistance of climbing ropes was investigated. As a model coatings, various oxides and/nitrides were tested. The abrasions tests were performed on commercial Taber Abraser and home-made devices. Depending oncoating, the wear resistance was significantly improved in comparison with non-coated rope for TiO2, SiO2, TiN and Ti thin films. On the other hand silica film produced by plasma enhance chemical vapor deposition method lead to strong damage of the ropeeven for very low number of cycles. Thus the material selection seems to be crucial for enhancement of the rope abrasion resistance.
