Confronting Intolerance in Post-Conflict Kosovo through Literary Fiction
Original language description
Through the fiction of E.M. Forster and Mark Twain, this essay described the theoretical and practical approach to teaching Mark Twain's Pudd'nhead Wilson and E.M. Forster's novel Where Angel Fear to Tread to students attending a summer course at the university in post-conflict Mitrovica in the Republic of Kosovo. In both these works, bigotry and intolerance was confronted and overcome. The theoretical approach combined a critical reading of the texts by examining through the epiphany experienced by themain characters the notion of nosce te ipsum or "know thyself" by means of Parker Palmer's notion of the subject-centered classroom. The background and experience in class as well as in Kosovo generally are thoroughly presented in the paper.
