The Idiosyncrasies of Tricksterism in Charles W. Chesnutt's
Original language description
This contribution explores the multifaceted force of trickster figures present in Charles W. Chesnutt's most frequently anthologized story, "The Goophered Grapevine," among others recounting the intertextual origin of one striking human and nonhuman hybrid character in the conjure story. In an outlandish tale told by a former slave, both blacks and the white slave master trick each other after a conjure woman's magic goes incredibly awry and causes unintended supernatural consequences on a valuable slave within the tale. The tale itself is a means to trick the white 'carpetbagger' from Ohio, the narrator named John. Nearly all of Chesnutt's tricksters, like the 'signifying monkey' cited by Henry Louis Gates's study of the famous black trickster figure, fail to prevail in the end. Through these multiple trickster figures, Chesnutt negotiates the complexities of slave plantation relationships.)
